Länsförsäkringar

Summary of Audit

Länsförsäkringar (LF) has made commendable efforts toward digital accessibility, with strong fundamentals in structure and design.

The homepage and mortgage application pages generally perform well with screen readers and keyboard navigation, though improvements are needed in coding headings, alt text coverage, and clearer navigation landmarks.

Visual accessibility is supported through effective zooming and readable elements, but could benefit from better hover contrast and a Dark mode option.

Cognitive accessibility is handled well with clear text, logical layout, and helpful visual cues, though reducing text-in-images and enabling collapsible sections would enhance clarity.

Motor accessibility is addressed with large clickable areas and responsive design, though some issues remain in mobile landscape mode.

Overall, LF demonstrates solid accessibility awareness, with some key areas for refinement to improve the experience for all users.

Introduction

Länsförsäkringar (LF) has made significant progress in creating inclusive digital solutions. This review was conducted both as an exercise in accessibility analysis and to assess how LF currently approaches accessibility. The focus was on two key pages: the "Homepage" and "Apply for a Mortgage" page.

The analysis considered various accessibility perspectives, including screen reader usage, keyboard navigation, visual impairments, cognitive disabilities, and motor impairments.

Screen reader review

The homepage and mortgage application page work fairly well with screen readers – tabbing through content is possible and most text is read aloud. There are alt texts on the logo and some images, which is positive. However, not all images have alt text, and some heading elements are incorrectly coded as paragraph tags. Headings and some text are not read aloud, which hinders accessibility. Link lists should have clearer coding descriptions, and the homepage lacks landmarks that would help screen reader users navigate more easily. The search function works well until reaching the results, where users need to tab extensively, causing potential confusion and frustration.

Keyboard navigation review

LF supports tabbing and includes focus indicators on all links, but not on images. Landmarks are missing, and it's also difficult to reach search results directly. On the mortgage page, it would be beneficial if the "Questions and Answers" heading could receive focus.

Visual impairment review

Zooming up to 200% works well, and the search feature includes both text and icon, aiding comprehension. The search field expands upon clicking and does not collapse when zoomed in, which supports users in staying on task. However, the hover state lacks sufficient color contrast, making it hard to detect. The mortgage application page contains a lot of information, which would benefit from clearer sectioning. Users with visual impairments also often prefer dark mode options to reduce eye strain and stay longer on a site.

Cognitive accessibility review

LF does many things well for users with cognitive impairments: clear and readable text, well-defined sections and headings, relevant icons, and links that make the content easier to understand. Some links feature raised designs or slight animations when hovered over, which enhances clarity. Link buttons are clearly marked and follow best practices. The information structure is logical, with relevant microcopy on buttons. However, text embedded in images can be overwhelming and hard to process. Collapsible sections on information-heavy pages would also help users manage and digest content more easily.

Motor impairment review

LF provides large clickable areas around buttons, making it easier for users to click accurately. Image links also offer large hit areas, and the spacing between clickable elements is generous, aiding successful interaction. The design is responsive and works well on both desktop and mobile views — with the exception that the homepage does not function properly in landscape mode on mobile devices.
